Large Figure WIP 3

This is just an update on what I have added since last time. It stands probably close to 4 feet tall right now. Not sure if you can tell but there is a piece of white foam on the very top. My plane is to build the next layer around that piece of foam. I maybe need to take it a little higher, just so that when I build the top layer around the bottom, there is more support.

Anyway, this is where I am now. I plan to gesso this entire layer once it all dries and then begin on the next level. I still need to get my fabric for once this is completed. I'm thinking the fabric should be in a white or off-white tone that I can paint with brown, red, and yellow tones. The tones will look pretty washed out I think.

Large Figure WIP 2

I spent the past day getting items for this, however, I will probably collecting for awhile. I have moved the entire figure from the foam board it was originally resting on and attached it to my old closet door. I am thinking that I'll be able to use this as a base piece and build it up about 4-5 feet. Once the entire base is form, I plan to go back over it with Great Stuff and maybe some wall putty to create texture to the work.

From there I will start the second layer (3-4 feet). The second layer will be built around the finished bottom layer. I will most likely lay some kind of plastic on the bottom layer to prevent the two from
sticking and then do what I did on the bottom to the top.

It will not be until after I have finished applying the Great Stuff and wall putty (and allowed both to dry) that I will paint the figure. As far as colors I am thinking more neutral tones, but I have not decided yet.

Once both pieces are done, I'll apply the fabric to the top piece and wrap fabric around and connect it at the corners. Just as before the fabric will be painted, torn, and stretched, but it will not be permanently attached the the bottom piece. Both the top and bottom pieces will work together, but they will not be physically attached to one another. This way I will be able to get the figure out the door.

Large Figure WIP 1

I am now attempting to build a much larger figure. The original idea was create the entire form out of foam, however, getting the material was becoming rather difficult. So I have decided to build it out of discarded materials. This is only the bottom piece.

My original idea was to build the form up on a smaller base form and then create two layers over top. The problem is, now that I am building this out of mixed materials, I not sure how smoothly I can get the layers to lay on top of one another. I'm thinking I may just need to build one solid form, however, getting it out the door is my next issue. I have some old closet doors that are of no more use, and was thinking I could use one of those. The width of the door is smaller than the width of the doorframe I have to get piece through. I could then build the entire form on the door and slide it right out the door. Also, rather than being 8' tall, it would have to be about 6'7" I'm not sure how I feel about that yet. So maybe I'll just need to figure out how to create layers. Or at least two layers.

Figure Trial 6.1

Not sure how I feel about the change in cloth right now. Just trying to figure out how it should be. I like the use of the printed cloth, however, I don't know how I feel about the aesthetically when using the printed cloth. I don't want the top and bottom to feel completely disconnected. By using a more muted cloth, I think it keeps the piece appearing as a solid form. However, on some level, I think the disconnect works with the idea of the pieces.

Figure Trial 6.0

This is not a final piece. I am still debating about the fabric on this piece. I pinned the fabric into the figure rather than glueing it, so I have time to decide how I feel about it. Rather than using the sheer nylon material, I took another nylon material and screen printed gossip magazine covers over, however, I removed faces and names. The idea being that it doesn't matter who or what is on the cover.

Figure Trial 5

This piece was developed from scrap pieces of foam, wood, an old pair of jeans, great stuff, nylon, hot glue, and paint. Once again here, I was only experimenting with the materials on a small scale.
