WIP: Brutus Deck

So I went and bought speedball ink and transparent base to roll on the deck after carving. I haven't actually finished carving the board yet, but I got too excited and decided to roll ink on some of it, that way I'd have an idea what it was looking like.

Here is the board thus far with the ink rolled on. I initially wanted to black to be somewhat transparent so you could still see the woodgrain, but it didn't look as strong. So I tossed the transparent bass and just rolled the black ink.

It still has a lot of work, but this gives me a solid idea on what I need to do next.

Brutus

I should have finished this one back in February, but never did. He's for a friend. Anyway, he's probably one of my most favorites. I'm currently using his design for a skateboard deck. Hopefully I'll get around to posting images of it soon!

Teresa

This is Teresa. My favorite thing about her is that I cannot decide how to look at her. I see some kind of bird with its long beak stretched upwards, with that brain shape has the head. However, at the same time, I see a rabbit where that brain shape is the head with the eyes and nose, and the beak becomes ears. The occurrence was completely accidental, as much as I'd like to take credit for planning that out.

I haven't posted anything in months, but I have been working... some anyway. This is one of my most recent images. Pretty pleased with it. I have been continuing with the character creations and ink on wood work.

Final: Timothy

This is the final sketch of Timothy. I think anyway. I have been thinking maybe I should incorporate some kind of backspace into the image. I have not yet decided how I feel about leaving the works as simple as they are. I  do enjoy how they appear as portraits of the creatures I have created. 

I think having some sort of backspace would give more information on the creatures and probably help in developing some kind of narrative, if a narrative is what I want. However, by not giving that information, maybe it will lead the viewer to wonder about the creature. Maybe they will then create their own narrative about them, which could be interesting.

And They Are Hanging!

Sorry for all the extra crap in the image, I hung them up in the studio to make sure they would hang properly. I was extra stoked to see that they did hang pretty well and they seem to level, which was an added bonus. Not sure yet what I'll being doing with them but I'm happy with them!

I'm actually a little bit further than this on this piece, but I haven't taken an update photo of it yet. I don't think I want to contain this one in a fabric frame. I think I like the that the piece is able to breath. Anyway, this is the other image I have currently been working on.

The final stages!

I completed the drawing, however, I'm unsure it is too simple or if I should leave it. I really like how it looks in this top image. I feel as though the image and the fabric bring a complete element to the piece, yet the wood settles it.

This is my attempt at building a frame. I went to Joann Fabrics and bought a shadow box frame, foam, and fabric. I basically tossed the glass of the shadow box frame, flipped it over and cut the foam to size. I then cut the middle part for where the wood image would go. 

From there, I wrapped the entire thing in the fabric I bought. I stapled both the inside and the back to hold the fabric. I also glued the middle section down to help in keeping the frame together. 

Then lastly, I added the wood piece. I do not think it works as well as it did on the pillow. It looks suffocated in the frame, and I do not know how I feel about that. Maybe if the frame was bigger or if rather than existing in the frame it existed on top of... I'm not sure yet. The wooden piece is still removable and was not attached to the frame, so my options are still open.

Ink Drawing on Wood WIP

This is a new piece I've recently started. It is not for school, just something I started sketching awhile ago and decided to try and use for something.

Anyway, this is the wood piece I picked up. I found it at Michael's for 2.99. I was going to get one of those wood panels (roughly 8"x10") and it was going to be about 8 dollars. I found this in the wood sections and thought it would be way cooler.

At the time I thought I was going to be painting on it, so I put a thin coat of clear gesso over it and then sanded it down to try and smooth it out.

This si the original sketch I drew up about a month or so ago. I never finished the sketch. I originally planned on finishing it, however, different plans came up for what to do with it, and here I am now. 

This is after I first sketched the image out on the wood. I had already started inking some of it before I decided I should take a picture of the progress. 

And this is where I was at last night. I plan to continue with it and see where it goes from there. I'm not sure if something should be added into the background yet or not. I think I like the simplicity of the image on wood. 

However, I love the print of the pillow behind it. I am thinking about trying to build some kind of frame around it with the fabric holding in the back. I plan to continue working on the piece this afternoon and sketch up my ideas with the fabric frame.  

I am thus far rather happy with it. I am not sure what I plan to do with it after finishing the ink drawing. I thought about putting some kind of clear gloss over it to make it shine. But I like the plain-ness of the wood. 

Russian Famine 1921 Painting

After that drawing all inspired from the Russian Famine of 1921 and that final drawing came out, I decided to paint it. And not to brag, but I'm kind of stoked about it. Its on a piece of crappy wood, that I spilled oil on, and its all warped and this isn't not a very good picture of it, but I'm happy with it. Plus was suppose to be a sketch painting, but I got more caught up in it than I had planned on.

Wood Burning Trial

So I decided to try wood burning and I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would. It was an experience though. I didn't think this idea through all the way. One of those impulses, where I thought It would be fun and then I realized I should have tested it some.

The top image is the beginning. The middle two are in-progress images. And the very bottom is what I ended with... thus far anyways.

Materials: Left over wood from the garage and a wood burning pen.

Making 3D Forms Painting Sketch

So I took that 3D form I made awhile ago and painted it. Gives the forms something different. A lot of the other forms I've been making come across some what smooth, they all seem to have the same lines. Using the 3D model it helped me find another way to create the forms without them seeming all the same.

Anyway, this is just a rendering of the form I created. Nothing special. Not sure what I'll do with it, just something to keep in mind.
