Beginning: Safari Tri Portrait

I have been in talks of doing a trade with a friend. I'm working on doing a set of three decks, safari themed. I have never painted a giraffe or a cheetah, but it should be fun.

First off, painting a giraffe is hard. Fun, but it was definitely harder than I expected. However, I am very happy with how this has turned out.

Second, this is not finished yet. It will not be completed until all three boards are done. Plus, I want to add a few silhouetted trees in the background. I can't put those in until I have all three boards though, since the background is going to overlap from board to board.

I plan to try and sit down tonight and prep the other two boards and then work on the background for all three boards.

Beginning: Untiled (so far)

Just started this guy the other day. Pretty excited about where it is going so far. Still unsure of a name, but it'll come to me eventually. Anyway, this was my first sketch...

Actually took a photo of the board after I did the sketching this time. I used a thicker marker, so its easier to see. I've been using those micropens, they don't dry well on the board and I can wipe away anything I don't like after I sketch it up. 

This is where I ended yesterday.

I'm a little further than this but this is my most updated photo. I need to clean her up in some and add her name still, but I am definitely happy with the progress. 

New Idea

So remember how I took that old Timothy board and just painted the whole board blue?

Well I'm thinking of starting a series of boards with the faces I use to draw. This is Doug:

This is actually a relief print I did of him, the actually drawing of him I don't have a picture of, so I'm just using this. Anyway, I went through this face of drawing all these weird alien like faces, they all had names just like the characters I have been developing, however, these guys are more human like than the ones I've been working on. 

Anyway, this is just a working idea. The paint on this board is totally screwed up, Its uneven and you can just messy, so I plan to use it as a tester. So yeah... I'll keep you posted on what I end up doing with it. 

Timothy: Re-Do

So I love the Timothy design, however, it doesn't hold as much as the other board I have recently been working on and have decided to go back and change it.

You probably can't tell but I tried sanding the image some, just to flatten the already painted area some. It did not work very well, but helped some.

Here I spray painted the entire board. My plan from here is redesign the entire board with Timothy still included. I haven't yet worked on a solid colored board, I've always kept the woodgrain so we'll see how this plays out.

Well he is pretty much finished. All I have left to do with him is to put a layer of some kind of varnish over it to keep the paint from chipping. But this is what the rest of Ralf's body looks like and then the bottom of the deck. I'll upload final images of the entire board with close ups soon.

So the sun did not turn out as round as I would have liked, but that's okay. I bought black gloss Krylon paint and used that to outline everything. It worked a lot better than anticipated, it dried quickly and let me shade pretty easily. I am super happy with the color though, and want to keep that going.

Updated: Web Mess

This is the last painting I posted after adding acrylic paint to it. I only add white acrylic paint. There was something about the original color of the nylon color that I didn't want to fully lose.

Materials: nylon, great stuff, wall putty, hot glue, acrylic paint

Web Mess

I have been getting bored somewhat with the only 2D space and I decided to try something new.

Materials: Nylon stockings, hot glue, wall putty, acrylic paint, oil paint, and tracing paper.

I took two of the forms I had originally painted on tracing paper to use for another painting and placed them in this messy web.

After all the research I have been doing about starvation and death and just some of the major issues within the world, this is kind of how I feel. Like we are all just stuck in this huge mess. And that is what I made. And I loved every minute of making it.

Sketch Work: Lines and Forms Study (continued)

Not sure how I feel about this thus far, but I do like the idea behind it. I'll probably play with it some more and try and get more of a feel of it.

I've been thinking a lot about toned paper and patterned paper. I think that would be cool to bring in. Maybe I can do some research on cultures in relation to areas of starvation or poverty and then tied that pattern back to my overall idea.

Still the same materials.

The Skinny (3): Continued

So I added ink and paint... not sure how I feel yet about it. I'm not ready to remove the tape around the edges yet because, I'm just not a hundred percent sure I'm ready to say I'm do with it. I think I may want to add more to it. Make the darks darker and the white just a little whiter.

Anyway, same as before, I took a pen came for the black lines in the background and dipped it in the ink. The black in the figures were achieved by taking a mechanical pencil and dipping the tip into the ink and essentially using it as a pen. And the paint was just brushed on.

Material: Printmaking paper, pencil, ink, acrylic paint

Another drawing, same idea. I think it looks blurry, I scanned it in though, so I'm not sure why it looks to weird. Anyway, same as before, made with pencil, charcoal, ink, and paint (8 1/2"x11").

Most recent finished drawing. I hope to make more like these. Maybe get a little series going and see what happens with it.

The image was originally drawn in pencil. But I wasn't getting my darks like I wanted. I tried charcoal and it was not working in my favor. It was then I grabbed a bottle of ink I had just sitting around. I don't one of those fancy ink dipping pens, so I just used a pen cap. I think it works rather well in the images. And lastly, I used oil paint for the white highlights.
